Beverage firm eyes Rwanda

KIGALI, Rwanda - Canadian firm, SteviaLife, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Rwandan government allowing it to promote the Stevia plant in the country.

 is a plant from which a sweetener is produced and can be used by foods and beverage companies such as Coca Cola Company, with many health advantages.

Kanimba Francois, the trade minister said, “Government of Rwanda has previously signed agreements with different private investors who aim to increase exports. Our aim is to show the collaboration between the government and the investors so that the strategy to investment and increase in exportation is realized.”

Kanimba signed the agreeement on behalf of the government while Chief Executive Officer and Founder of SteviaLife Dorian Banks signed on behalf of SteviaLife Company.

“This plant is a unique plant that has natural sugar with no negative effects on human health. Because of its health advantages, most foods and beverage companies worldwide that use sugar are in search of this plant. This is therefore quite an advantage to Rwanda and as government we will support this investor in acquiring land needed to grow more of this plant,” Kanimba said.

According to Dorian Banks, with1000 hectares of land, they can start up a small extracting facility which will allow them not to ship the leave out of the country but ship out a more value added product (the crude product).

 “This is quite an advantage to us as Rwanda as we aim at increasing our export revenues,” Kanimba said.

To make the final product (the refined product), this company needs about 5000ha.

With 1000ha, Rwanda will be able to get $14million from the exported unprocessed dry Stevia leaves per year.

Banks said however when they start up an extracting plant and they start exporting crude products, Rwanda will be able to get $140million per year.

With its full establishment in the country, the problems of unemployment especially among the youth will positively be impacted.

Today the company employees over 250 Rwandans per 100ha and these emplotyees are paid between Rwf550-700 (80 US cents to $1) per kilogram of Stevia produced.

SteviaLife Company piloted in Rulindo district with clear prospective sites in Bugesera, and nurseries in Kirehe, Gasabo, Rwamagana, and Nyaruguru. Stevia plant is a perennial plant that is harvested every 3months, and can stand Rwanda’s climatic changes.

With the government initiative of bringing in more investors to the country, the country has signed agreements with over 38 investors in tea, coffee production, in industries and the services sector among others.
